Incoming Students & Transfers
Transitioning into the High School setting can be both exciting and full of difficult choices. With that in mind we have provided a great deal of information for both incoming freshman and our transfer students from out of state and across our region who attend Cape Fear specifically for the musical experience offered by our band program.

Take a moment to review wealth of information below. Feel free to contact us with your questions and to assist in the enrollment process!

The Cape Fear Department of Music consists of: The Marching Band,  Winterguard, Stage/Jazz band, Wind Ensemble and a Concert Band. We are proud of the program’s State, Regional and National level accomplishments. Our organization directly affects more than 180+ students and indirectly touches the lives of hundreds more family members, friends, and the Fayetteville community as a whole. In addition our program proudly serves as Fayetteville/Cumberland County's ambassador both in-state and nationally through numerous performance engagements, competitions and requests for civic functions.  Please continue to support the band program and the young adults who work very hard to achieve their goals.

THE FACTS

We know that high school band students represent the top of the academic scale in our schools. We know that band students are averaging 62 points higher on SAT tests, which would indicate they are stronger in verbal and math scores than other members of the student body. We also know band students are students who enjoy a successful high school career, go on to college, and become the key leaders in our society. There is a proven link between the top achiever academically and the performing arts student.

Music is one of the few academic disciplines that requires the student to master skills and apply them in performance. Music involves multiple forms of learning.

Studies by the College Entrance Examination Board show that:

* "New research on intelligence and brain function point in exciting future directions that tie directly to music, while the continuing use of music as part of the curriculum is clearly associated with both academic skills and personal characteristics that are highly desirable for school progress and for developing the kind of well-educated youngpeople we need for the nation's well-being."

* Students (1999) with experience in music performance scored measurably higher in both the verbal and math sections of the Standardized Achievement Test (22 points above the mean on verbal and 18 points above the mean on math).

* There continues to be a significant (and growing) spread between the scores obtained by musicians and those of their non-musical counterparts.

* The correlation between cognitive learning and musical understanding continues to prove they are linked, and improving one will develop the other. In  fact, music is suspected to be the key for unlocking the scientific mind.

* The theory of "multiple intelligences" tags music as one of the separate minds, and being exposed to music strengthens all other learning forms.

* Scores rise proportionately higher with the length of time spent studying music in school.

One of the facets of the Cape Fear Music Department that we are most proud of is that we accomplish very high goals and maintain a National level of success while embracing a balance with the total school experience. Students in the CAPE FEAR HIGH SCHOOL BAND consistently graduate in the top of their class.  We believe that students should experience many diverse activities and encourage them to do so.
